Lagos E-Hailing Drivers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Fares and Platform Deductions

October 12, 2026 · Olamide

App-based transport operators in Lagos State have launched an open-ended work stoppage, citing unresolved grievances over commission fees, fares, and operational security.

E-hailing drivers across Lagos State have initiated an indefinite strike following prolonged disputes regarding ride fares, platform commissions, operational deductions, and driver welfare, according to a report by Daily Post Nigeria.

The industrial action was announced in an official notice by the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The union stated that the walkout, scheduled to start on a Monday, will continue until meaningful progress is achieved in resolving the sector’s grievances.

Disputes Over Pay and Working Conditions

According to AUATON, the decision to halt operations stems from persistent issues regarding operational policies, personal safety, driver security, and the overall commercial sustainability of e-hailing work. The union noted that repeated attempts by drivers and other industry stakeholders to highlight these operational difficulties had failed to yield satisfactory results.

The collective action aims to push app platforms toward addressing factors that affect driver earnings. AUATON argued that re-evaluating operational structures could significantly stabilize the sector, noting that higher net earnings would assist drivers with vehicle maintenance, reduce worker turnover, and improve retention across the transport ecosystem.

Appeals to Fleet Owners and Managers

Recognizing the immediate economic fallout that an indefinite shutdown presents to drivers who operate vehicles on rental or hire-purchase contracts, AUATON issued a direct appeal to vehicle owners and fleet managers.

The union asked fleet partners to temporarily freeze mandatory daily remittance targets while the strike remains active. Because drivers will not be generating income on the road, AUATON requested that fleet operators refrain from imposing fines, sanctions, or punitive measures on contractors participating in the collective action.

Enforcement and Next Steps

To enforce the shutdown, AUATON announced plans to deploy internal monitoring task forces across all local government areas in Lagos State. The union warned that drivers found operating in defiance of the boycott could face internal disciplinary procedures.

The declaration was signed by AUATON’s Lagos State Chairman, Jaiyesimi Olalabi Azeez, widely known as Makavelli. The leadership emphasized that the purpose of the strike is not to disrupt businesses arbitrarily, but rather to compel platform operators to negotiate sustainable working conditions. The union reiterated its willingness to enter into constructive, peaceful dialogue with platform companies, fleet owners, and public stakeholders to negotiate a long-term resolution.
