Plateau State: Vigilante Member Killed in Bokkos Local Government Area

October 12, 2026 · Olamide

A 28-year-old vigilante member was fatally shot in Plateau State's Bokkos area during an early morning assault by suspected bandits, prompting a military search operation.

A 28-year-old member of a local vigilante group was killed following an early morning assault by suspected bandits in Plateau State, according to security accounts published by Daily Post Nigeria.

The victim, identified as Goyok Jamok, was attacked in Magi Mbar village, situated within the Bokkos Local Government Area. The incident underscores the persistent security risks faced by rural communities and community-based security volunteers operating in north-central Nigeria.

Details of the Bokkos Attack

According to security sources cited in the initial report, the shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. on October 10. The gunfire prompted an immediate response from troops attached to Sector 5 of Operation Enduring Peace (OPEP), a military security outfit stationed in the nearby settlement of Mbar.

Upon reaching the location, responding personnel found Jamok deceased from apparent gunshot wounds. Security sources indicated that the attackers, whom they characterized as suspected kidnappers and bandits, fled the vicinity immediately upon spotting the advancing military forces, abandoning their objective before direct contact could be made.

Following the retreat of the armed assailants, relatives of the deceased arrived at the location to retrieve Jamok’s remains for burial rites.

Military Response and Investigation

Security operatives have reportedly commenced search-and-rescue operations aimed at tracking down the armed perpetrators in the surrounding terrain. However, official sources have not publicly released specific information regarding the identities, numbers, or exact routes taken by the fleeing suspects.

Key elements regarding the confrontation remain unconfirmed:

  • The specific motives or intended targets of the assailants prior to the encounter.
  • Whether additional injuries or property damage were sustained during the attack.
  • The current whereabouts or operational network of the armed group involved.

The Role of Local Defense in Rural Security

In many rural communities across Plateau State and neighboring jurisdictions, local vigilante groups often serve as an initial line of community observation and defense, supplementing state security forces who face vast rural expanses to patrol. These volunteers frequently coordinate with coordinated deployments, such as Operation Enduring Peace, to monitor rural corridors and provide early warnings during security breaches.

However, lightly armed local defense members frequently face disproportionate risks when confronting heavily armed criminal groups engaged in banditry or abduction schemes across the region.

Current Status

At present, authorities have not confirmed any arrests in connection with Jamok’s death. Military personnel and joint security task forces continue to monitor the Bokkos corridor as investigations and tracking efforts proceed.
