Political tensions in southeastern Nigeria have drawn sharp condemnation from Peter Obi following a violent encounter targeting political supporters in Enugu State. According to a report by Daily Post Nigeria, the presidential figure voiced grave concerns over rising political aggression, cautioning that unchecked violence creates instability capable of harming the wider society.

Airport Clashes and Reported Casualties

The latest wave of tension unfolded at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu. Supporters of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) had gathered at the facility on a Saturday to welcome Chinyeaka Ohaa, the party’s governorship candidate, when unidentified thugs disrupted the gathering.

Addressing the development in a video posted on the social platform X, Obi expressed deep frustration over the assault. According to Daily Post Nigeria, Obi stated that the violent altercation reportedly claimed a life, underscoring the severe risks posed by political intimidation in public transport hubs and civic spaces.

Pattern of Disruption and Threats

The confrontation at the airport is not an isolated occurrence within the region, based on party accounts cited in the report. Approximately one month prior to the airport clash, the NDC alleged that members attending a local grassroots assembly in Obuoffia Ward, located within the Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State, were attacked by armed actors described by the party as state-sponsored.

Beyond physical confrontations at party rallies, Obi highlighted that political hostility has increasingly hindered public dialogue and personal appearances. He recounted that several of his own planned engagements across various states had to be called off recently because host organizations and individuals extending invitations faced overt intimidation and threats.

A Warning on the Consequences of Lawlessness

Obi issued a direct caution to political figures and operatives responsible for instigating or tolerating violence, warning that lawlessness cannot be controlled once it is unleashed.

“Those in government should know that when anarchy comes, it consumes everybody,” Obi stated in the video, urging perpetrators to immediately halt such actions.

The situation highlights enduring anxieties regarding political tolerance, freedom of assembly, and candidate security during regional organizing efforts. While authorities face renewed scrutiny over crowd security and political protection, party officials continue to urge leadership at all levels to prevent local disputes from devolving into wider regional turbulence.
