The annual selection process for the FIFPRO World XI has reached a significant milestone,
with the release of the 2026 nominee list. According to reports from _Naija News_,
the shortlist highlights a blend of established icons who have dominated the sport
for over a decade and contemporary players who have recently defined the global
game.

## The Men’s Shortlist

The men’s category features several high-profile names that have become synonymous
with the FIFPRO World XI in recent years. Among the notable nominees are Cristiano
Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, both of whom continue to be recognized for their contributions
to the sport. Joining these veteran forwards are Harry Kane and Rodri, both of whom
have been recognized for their performances at the club and international levels
throughout the 2026 season.

## The Women’s Shortlist

The women’s nominee list is equally star-studded, featuring prominent figures from
the current landscape of professional football. _Naija News_ confirmed that Aitana
Bonmatí and Alexia Putellas are among the players shortlisted for the 2026 edition.
These selections reflect the ongoing influence of these athletes in major tournaments
and domestic leagues.

## Understanding the FIFPRO World XI Selection

The FIFPRO World XI is unique in the world of football awards because it is determined
by the players themselves. Professional footballers from across the globe are invited
to vote for their peers, selecting the individuals they believe were the top performers
in their respective positions during the calendar year.

 * **Goalkeepers:** Selected based on shot-stopping ability, distribution, and defensive
   organization.
 * **Defenders:** Recognized for their tactical awareness, tackling, and ability
   to contribute to build-up play.
 * **Midfielders:** Evaluated on their control of the game, creativity, and defensive
   transition.
 * **Forwards:** Chosen for their goal-scoring output and impact in the final third.

While the list of nominees provides a clear indication of the players under consideration,
the final XI will be determined by the cumulative votes cast by the global player
union’s membership. The specific criteria for the voting process emphasize peer
recognition, ensuring that the final team represents the collective opinion of those
who play the game at the highest level.

## Looking Ahead

As the voting process concludes, the football community awaits the official announcement
of the final teams. The FIFPRO World XI remains one of the most prestigious honors
in the sport, as it represents a consensus among professional athletes regarding
who truly stood out during the 2026 season. Further details regarding the final
ceremony and the specific breakdown of votes are expected to be released by FIFPRO
in the coming weeks.

While the current report from _Naija News_ highlights the primary nominees, a full
list of all candidates across every position has not been provided in the initial
announcement. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see which players
ultimately secure their place in the final 2026 World XI lineup.
